Our Heritage With Trapping

My grandson and I recently attended the Delaware Basic Trapper Education Course offered by the state of Delaware’s Division of Fish and Wildlife. The course began with a short history of the practice of trapping including it’s contribution to our heritage and progressed to the types and purposes of the traps that are currently in use today. After returning to the classroom in the afternoon we ventured to the swamp area where the instructor had previously set a dozen traps the night before. As the instruction demonstrated the best way to check the traps it was discovered that they had successfully trapped a half dozen muskrats. After retrieving the rats the instructor covered in detail the basis of skinning the animal in a manner that would preserve the fur. In this article I will be explaining a bit of the heritage involved with the art of trapping.
